What it is:
"We define Christian spiritual direction, then, as help given by one Christian to another which enables that person to pay attention to God's personal communication to him or her, to respond to this personally communicating God, to grow in intimacy with this God, and to live out the consequences of the relationship." (Barry and Connolly, The Practice of Spiritual Direction, p. 8)
How it works in our life:
"Spiritual direction is like hitting the pause button in my life. In the pause, in the peace and calm and safety of my sessions, I can reflect on how God has been moving in my life, healing me, helping me, guiding me, loving me. Through thick and thin, as the days between sessions turn into a month long, I look for God's imprint all around me and within me. My discoveries and affirmations within the discipline of Spiritual Direction become the cornerstone for all that follows. Thanks be to God!" (Wendy Dixon)
How you can receive Spiritual Direction:
Several trained spiritual directors live and minister in the North Shore area. At Christ the Redeemer, you can contact Wendy Dixon (email) for more information. Wendy received her Spiritual Direction training through the Spiritual Direction Internship Initiative at the Campion Retreat Center in Weston, MA. She is a member of the Evangelical Spiritual Directors Network and can refer you to directors outside of our congregation, if you desire.
Spiritual Direction is similar, but not identical, to other companioning ministries such as counseling, mentoring, and discipleship. To meet with someone in one of these other contexts, please contact the clergy for referrals.
